Common Misconceptions
There are many misconceptions about Jews and historic events regarding Judaism. I want to go over some popular misconceptions and why they are not true. It is important to understand that these are real misconceptions individuals have to promote inclusivity.
The idea of Israel exploiting the Holocaust to commit another one or the direct comparison of Jews to Nazis and framing Palestinians as the "new Jews".
Why this is inaccurate:
The state of Israel was established after World War ll and given to the Jewish people for a number of reasons. Jews had historical and religious ties to the land of Israel. The rise of the Zionest Movement in the 1800's acted as a propeller as it sought out a sovereign Jewish homeland where Jews would no longer be vulnerable, given the extreme violence they endured in Europe. The British government issued The Balfour Declaration, which supported the Zionest movement and backed up Israel being the Jews homeland. In 1947 the UN recommended the partition of Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, creating tension and fighting between the communities. This shows that Jews gaining Israel as their homeland was a fulfillment to their historical roots and safety rather than compensation after the Holocaust. The idea of Israel committing a genocide is factually inaccurate according to international law. A genocide is a proven intent to systematically destroy a national, ethnic, religious, or racial group. Israel is acting out of self defense and aimed to fight terrorist organizations such as Hamas. This directly steers away from the action of exterminating a group of people with a clear intent.
1. Holocaust Inversion
2. Denial or Distortion
Denial: The Holocaust never happened, denies the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g., gas chambers) or intentionally of the genocide of the Jewish people under the nazi regime.
Distortion: Excuses, minimizes, or misinterprets the known historical record of the Holocaust.
Example: "The Holocaust happened but it wasn't six million."
Why this is inaccurate:
The Holocaust was a historic genocide that killed six million Jews under the Nazi regime. Nazis left extensive paperwork, exposing the truth to the Holocaust. Extermination camps still lay intact today exposing the horrors of what went on due to the physical remanent of gas chambers and crematoria. There are survivors and civilians of Europe confirming the historic tragedy that took place. Denying these historical facts is an active form of antisemitism, as it shifts blame, erodes history, and rehabilitates the image of the nazi regime.
3. All Powerful
The idea that Jews are "behind the scenes", "puppeteers", or "masterminds". The idea of blending in because they are white to control things.
Why this is inaccurate:
Throughout history, prejudiced societies have used Jews as a scapegoat to explain complex crises, therefore making them out to be an evil entity or "dangerous masterminds". The idea of a unified Jewish "mastermind" ignores the diversity within the Jewish population as it is filled with varying political, economic, and social views. The diversity within the Jewish population does not allow a single coordinated entity. This idea brings up The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, I previosuly touched on, under "Understanding History". The narrative created draws from The Protocols, meaning the idea lies on old, outdated conspiracy theories. Today we see this conspiracy through the claim of Israel or the "Jewish Lobby" controls the U.S. or Europe.
